More than one third of adults take prescription pain medications on a daily basis and while those pills can be great for relieving short term pain, the side effects from taking them long term can be startling.
Ashley VandenBerg, physical therapist and Lowell Clinic Director, stopped by the studios of WOOD tv’s eightWest and talked with Rachael Ruiz about how physical therapy treatment is different than taking prescription pain medication for things like pelvic pain, sports injuries, knee osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, low back pain, and various other conditions.
Many people don’t realize that physical therapy can be a safe alternative to prescription pain pills. While there is a time and place for prescription pain medications, if taken in combination with physical therapy you can decrease pain even faster. Oftentimes with patients we see the pills simply masking the pain, but not solving the problem; physical therapy can address what’s causing the issue and work towards a permanent solution.
