Traveling Comfortably – Proper Fit is Key With Backpacks

Ten years ago I embarked on my first overseas trip to Europe. As a wide-eyed tourist, suitcase in hand, I was ready to take on the historic cobblestone streets of Paris, Madrid, and London and all they had to offer. Not long into my trip I realized that meandering on and off busy public transportation, and up and down those beautiful (but bumpy) cobblestone streets, was a complete pain while lugging along a wheeled suitcase. It had never occurred to me to bring any other form of luggage, but as I stood in the midst of all the hustle and bustle, I quickly realized that a hands-free bag was the way to go.

Fast forward a few years and I’m ready to hit those busy European streets again, only this time I know I will be much better equipped because I have taken to the ways of the backpackers – it’s hands free for me, baby! I borrowed an old hiking pack from a friend, packed it to the gills with clothes and necessities, and off I went. I must admit, it was great not having to pull the suitcase up and down steps and through traffic, and having my hands free was nice, but this pack was killing my back and shoulders (and not doing any favors for my posture!)

Having learned the hard way and determined not to give up on the whole backpack idea, I knew there had to be a solution. The next time I traveled I enlisted the help of a professional and purchased a bag that was designed to fit my body type, and I had it properly fitted. Its a very similar concept to the idea of youth backpack safety, only it actually makes even more sense for adults because when we hike and travel our bags can be upwards of 20+ pounds.

Once I had a properly fitted backpack, I was amazed at the difference. I could carry the pack all day and because the weight was distributed on my hips, I never felt an ounce of back or shoulder pain. In fact, I never felt any discomfort anywhere in my entire body. I’m pleased to say that I have taken that pack with me on every trip I’ve gone on over the last five years and I’m still incredibly pleased.
