New Year, New You: how to lose weight and keep it off The holidays are over and a new year is here. For many of us it's the time of year we strive to drop the unwanted pounds that we gained eating all those holiday treats. If your resolution is to lose weight, there are some things to consider. First, losing weight requires a combination of diet modification plus exercise. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends 200-300 minutes of physical activity per week to lose weight. Understanding Nutrition and ModerationProper nutrition is essential to maintaining a healthy weight, providing energy for daily activities, and boosting your immune system to keep you healthy. Checking nutrition labels on products can be helpful in monitoring your daily calorie intake as well as monitoring intake of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. When reading those labels you should consider that they are based on a 2000-calorie diet. You may require more or less than 2000 calories per day. To determine your specific calorie needs, visit mayoclinic.com to access a calorie calculator and identify how many calories you will need per day based on your age, body size and activity level. You should also consider that just because an item looks like a single serving doesn’t mean that it is. Measuring portions according to recommended serving sizes will save you from consuming unwanted calories.Running Club for 5/3 River Bank Run If you are interested in running the 5, 10, or 25k this May at the annual 5/3 River Bank Run, or just want to challenge yourself, consider joining our running group. We'll meet Tuesday nights at 7:30pm for a shorter run that will eventually include a training portion (hills, fartlek, tempo etc.) We will also meet Saturday mornings for a longer run.
The first 25k run will be a 5 mile run on January 29. The 10k group runs will begin on February 5 with a 3 mile run, and the 5k training will begin on March 23. All runs will start at 10am, and we'll meet at Riverside Park, at the first boat launch. NPT People Profile: Diana Painter I am a physical therapist here at Northern. I graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2007 and have been practicing physical therapy in out-patient settings ever since. I have worked at Northern's Wayland clinic for the past year and a half, but I am looking forward to moving to the Cedar Springs location when I return from maternity leave in March. I love working with patients of all ages, and with a variety of diagnoses. I have taken courses in McKenzie training with focus on the lumbar, cervical, and thoracic spine and am working toward becoming certified. I recently moved to the Rockford area and welcomed my beautiful baby boy in December. My hobbies include running, hiking, camping, XC skiing, and spending time with my family and friends.
