Get your back on track…with physical therapy

Core Did you know that it’s estimated that in the U.S. alone, there is an expected 31 million people with lower back pain at any given time? It’s also the second reason, only after the common cold, for visiting a healthcare provider. If you’re suffering from back pain, consider physical therapy.

Physical therapy not only helps treat back pain, but also helps prevent it. If you’re experiencing back pain, one of our therapists will educate you about how the spine is intended to work and give you the tools you need to get it working in a healthy way again. They will also help alleviate your symptoms so you can return to functioning at a normal level as soon as possible. Once you’re back to that level you will learn core stability exercises, which reduce the risk for recurrence of pain.

For those dealing with long-term back pain, our philosophy is that it should be viewed in a similar light of other chronic diseases in which management, rather than curative therapy, is optimal. Our goal is to empower our patients by teaching them self-management strategies that are beneficial and realistic.

The McKenzie Method – is it right for you?

Back pain is not always curable and for many it’s a life-long problem. If you’ve been suffering from back pain for a long time consider learning more about self-management therapies, like The McKenzie Method.

The goal of any therapy is to help a patient become as independent as possible by teaching them exercises that will help them to alleviate their aches and pains. This is especially true with the McKenzie approach. It involves minimal hands on intervention from the therapist and offers more patient directed activities. The goal is for the patient to be able to carry on the exercise without the assistance of a physical therapist so that they have the tools to relieve their pain.

More and more local physicians are referring their patients for McKenzie therapy, as there is a lot of research behind this method of treatment and its effectiveness in the relief of back and neck pain. For more information call or visit any of our locations.

Backpack Safety Day – NPT is coming to a school near you!

FitnessDid you know that approximately 6000 students are sent to emergency rooms each year due to backpack related injuries? Stop by during Backpack Safety Day with your child and their backpack for a free fitting. It only takes 3-5 minutes and you'll leave knowing your child's pack fits properly, reducing his or her risk of back pain.

Coopersville's South Elementary on August 31st from 5:30-7:00pm

NPT People Profile: Lisa Otterbein-Bolek, PT, Coopersville

I enjoy being a physical therapist because it allows me to help others understand their bodies so they can help themselves. My #1 goal is to empower my patients by teaching them exercises so they can manage their symptoms on a daily basis from home. This is probably why I’m so passionate about the McKenzie method, which I have been certified in since 2006.

I was born and raised in Coopersville and enjoy treating patients there in the tight-knit community. When I’m not working, I enjoy organizing, hanging out by the pool, running 5Ks, and attending sporting events with my husband Tony.
