I’ve been a Physical Therapist for eight years, and almost five of those years I have worked for NPT. My area of professional passion is lymphedema therapy as well as treating vestibular and balance dysfunction. I am a certified lymphedema therapist through LANA. I love meeting people, hearing their stories, and figuring out how I can help them return to doing their favorite things. I travel to all five of our NPT offices as a “floating” physical therapist. Outside of work, I enjoy camping, speedskating, playing soccer, and scrapbooking.

New Certifications = More Advanced Care

Thursday, November 03, 2011

Congratulations are in order for two of our therapists who recently achieved advanced certifications in their respective fields.

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation Certificate

Terri Jeurink, a Physical Therapist at our Coopersville Clinic has received her Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation Certificate from the Women’s Health Section of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).

This certification recognizes the specialty of pelvic floor rehabilitation, including evaluation and treatment for men and women who may have urinary incontinence (leakage), urinary frequency or urgency, bowel dysfunction, pelvic pain. To obtain the certification, Terri had to complete three different classes and competency exams held by the APTA, collect letters of reference, and complete a case report within 1 year after completing the necessary courses.

“I am passionate about helping people feel better, especially when it comes to issues that affect their everyday lives. Obtaining my Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation Certification will allow me to better assist those patients and help them feel good again.” Jeurink says.

Orthopedic Clinical Specialist Certificate

Susan Roemer, a Physical Therapist at our Wayland Clinic has received her Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) Certificate from the American Physical Therapy Association.

To acquire the certification, Susan had to demonstrate extensive knowledge in the field of orthopedic physical therapy through experience (of which she has 8 years), continued education, and passing a rigorous exam that tests her intricate clinical knowledge of orthopedic tests, problem solving, assessment, evaluation and treatment skills.

“While attaining the OCS certification I acquired new techniques for diagnosing and treating orthopedic conditions, which has helped me to treat patients more efficiently and effectively” Susan said.

Great job Susan & Terri! Your continued education will help our patients get back to feeling good!

I enjoy being a physical therapist because it allows me to help others understand their bodies so they can help themselves. My #1 goal is to empower my patients by teaching them exercises so they can manage their symptoms on a daily basis from home. This is probably why I’m so passionate about the McKenzie method, which I have been certified in since 2006.

I was born and raised in Coopersville and enjoy treating patients there in the tight-knit community. When I’m not working, I enjoy organizing, hanging out by the pool, running 5Ks, and attending sporting events with my husband Tony.

After graduating from GVSU, I spent time in outpatient orthopedics, home health care, burn/wound care, nursing homes, and working with veterans. I am passionate about spinal manual therapy and have taken multiple continuing education courses honing these skills and earning a certification in the Mulligan approach. I feel it's all of these experiences that led me to the purchase of NPT in 2003. In recent years, I've spent less time treating patients and more time in billing so I can help our patients understand the ever-changing world of health insurance and Medicare.

When I'm not working at our clinic or on the computer managing medical records, you'd likely find me near Wayland where I live with my husband, three kids, and four hunting dogs. I enjoy spending quality time with my family, scrapbooking, card making, reading mysteries, and spending time at the cottage.
